Mobile Phones and Yondr

WSE is a phone-free space

We recognise that mobile technology is a feature of modern life for everyone, and that there are many benefits to responsible use of mobile phones and other devices. However, regular use of mobile device applications, especially social media, can impact negatively on learning, relationships and wellbeing, and compromise our safeguarding principles and practices.

WSE is a phone-free space. To support this, in Years 7-11 we use a system called Yondr. Yondr has been used across the world in over 1,000 schools, as well as at concerts, comedy shows, businesses, camps, weddings and special events of all kinds. The goal is to encourage people to enage with each other and their surroundings.

Since the introduction of Yondr at WSE, staff and students have reported a significant improvement in the mental wellbeing of students, improved focus and attention in lessons and greater sense of calm at social times.

The Yondr Program employs a simple, lockable pouch that stores a mobile phone. Every student will secure their phone, switched off,  in a personally assigned Yondr pouch as they enter school each morning.  Students will maintain possession of their phones inside the locked pouch and will not use them until their pouches are opened at the end of the school day as they exit school.  Students are required to bring their Yondr pouches  to and from school each day and are responsible for their pouches at all times. Pouches are provided free of charge.

Should students be found to be using their mobile phone without consent during the school day their phone will be confiscated and stored safely at student reception until the end of the school day. Students will receive negative behaviour points and an after school detention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want to reach my child during the school day?

We want our students to be engaged in their learning. Please refrain from contacting your child during the school day unless it is an emergency. Please contact Reception at 01722 328565 to reach your child. Staff will ensure messages are passed on to your child. If there is a need for your child to contact you in exceptional circumstances, staff will supervise unlocking the pouch.

What if there is an emergency?

In case of an emergency, we direct our students to safety first. School staff will be able to unlock a Yondr case in a matter of seconds for students once they are in a safe and secure location.

Will my child’s phone be safe?

Yes, because students are in possession of their phone in the Yondr pouch and should keep the pouch stored away in their school bags.

What if the case gets damaged?

If a student damages or loses their Yondr case, they will be required to submit their phone to the Academy reception.  The Yondr case is the property of WSE Academy. Any damage to or loss of school property will result in a replacement charge of £5.00 paid via Parentpay. To request a replacement pouch please conatct your child's tutor.

How can I clean my child’s Yondr pouch?

In adherence to CDC guidelines, Yondr pouches can be washed in cold water for a short cycle and dried on a short cycle and/or air dried. Pouches can also be cleaned with a disinfectant cleaner.
