What is a Young Carer?
A young carer is a child, under the age of 18, who spends time looking after or helping a family or household member or members. The person may require support from a young carer for a range of reasons, including physical or mental illnesses, disability or due to the misuse ofâ¯alcohol or substances. Most young carers look after a parent or a sibling but can be caring for more than one person, for example, a parent and a sibling. A young carer carries out a significant role within their home.â¯
The range of care, and time spent caring, can vary, but every young carer carefully balancesâ¯their schoolwork and social life. Without recognition and support, caring responsibilities can have far-reaching impact on a child’s life. No two young carers’ needs are the same, which is why WSE offer various support and initiatives to meet the needs of young carers.
What we do at WSE
At WSE we provide a weekly young carer breakfast club – a safe space where breakfast is provided and a time to chat with other young carers and be part of student voice helping to continue to develop our young carer provision. We can also offer extra help with homework, flexibility around calling home, someone to talk to and alternatives to after school activities. We can also make a referral to Wiltshire Council for a Young Carer Assessment with your permission. We work closely with MyTime, the Young Carer charity and Wiltshire Young Carers in Schools to ensure our provision is informed and up to date.
